Our Insights

In the UK, over 850,000 people currently suffer from a form of dementia, with Alzheimer’s accounting for between 50-70% of these diagnosis. Tragically, this figure is set to nearly double by 2040, with an expected 1.6 million cases across the country.

The majority of these people are being cared for by family members, close friends and neighbours, with 52% of relatives providing more than 50 hours of care a week. Charities such as Dementia UK and Alzheimer’s Society offer invaluable support to these unsung heroes but sadly do not have unlimited resources and can only help so much.

One of the most problematic concerns that families who care for relatives with dementia have is medication adherence. In fact, studies have shown that people affected by dementia only manage to take the correct dosage of their prescribed pills 11% of the time.

Dementia medication is often complex and considerable, with many dementia patients also having a wide range of other health conditions and behavioural issues that need treating. Therefore, it is vital that families affected by dementia, and in fact, those affected by any medical condition that requires multiple medications, are able to provide their loved ones with a safe, secure and consistent way to take their prescribed pills.

Dementia Case Studies

Case Study One:

Jody’s mother is 70 years old and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s four years ago. She lives alone and used to be heavily reliant on her daughter, requiring visits twice a day and often in the middle of the night. This was mostly due to issues with taking her prescribed medication. Jody’s mother struggled most days to take the correct dosage of dementia medication, sometimes taking three days’ worth in one go and other times underdosing.

I used to live very close to my mother but when I moved 45 minutes away, I became very anxious about her medicines. My mother would have meltdowns in the pharmacy when they refused to give her more medication and often suffered with anxiety palpitations. It was a horrible time.”

It was shortly after this that Jody discovered the TabTime automatic pill dispenser, a chance finding on Google that led to “life changing” results.

Before discovering this product, Jody’s mother used dosset boxes with little success. However, the combination of audio and visual alarms that the TabTime automatic dispenser provides, proved to be exactly what she needed.

“My mother would often hide things, especially her medication, but the persistent flashing lights and noise alarm of the tablet dispenser made it impossible for her not to take her dementia medication. She now takes it with her everywhere, neatly fitted into her handbag. It has become a part of her routine and she loves it.”

However, it is not just her mother that the automatic pill dispenser has helped. It has also dramatically improved Jody’s quality of life, allowing her to achieve things that would never have been possible if she were still having to visit her mother twice daily.

“It would not be an over exaggeration to say that it has enabled me to get my life back. Before I bought this product, I had to work from home as I never knew when my mother would need me. Now I have been promoted, my work/life balance has improved significantly, and I enjoy peace of mind knowing that my mother’s medication needs are being taken care of.”

Case Study Two:

Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s only last year, Andrew’s mother who is 78, also suffers with arthritis and has to take seven tablets every morning and four in the evening. Before discovering the TabTime automatic pill dispenser, she used a normal dosset box to store her dementia medication but struggled to open it due to her arthritis and often got confused with the dates.

Fortunately, Andrew was offered a life line by the Admiral Nurses who help to care for his mother.

“After an instance when my mother took too many of her dementia tablets, one of her nurses recommended the TabTime automatic pill dispenser and we haven’t looked back since. Not only does it do the job but my mother loves using it and shows it off to all her friends.”

Andrew’s mother currently uses two automatic pill dispensers due to the volume of medication that she needs on a daily basis and enjoys the independence that the product provides her.

“The beauty of the product for us is that you can program it to go off up to six times a day if needed, which has alleviated a lot of the pressure on my wife, or my angel in disguise as I call her.”

Andrew also took advantage of the VAT free automatic pill dispenser which is available for those purchasing the product for someone with a chronic disability such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Finding out we could save 20% on this much-needed life-line for my mother was just the icing on the cake. The automatic pill dispenser looks smart, is durable and provides excellent value for money. What more could we want?”

Case Study Three:

Helen’s father is 84 years old and was diagnosed with dementia three years ago. He lives on his own and is still quite independent, having no carers but instead relying on family for help where needed.

For the first few years of his diagnosis, he had his own system for taking his dementia medication and this worked well initially. Unfortunately, he then started to forget to take his pills in the evening.

We wanted a solution that was simple and that did not knock my father’s confidence as he enjoyed being in control of his own medication. It also needed to be fairly low tech.”

Helen was recommended the TabTime automatic pill dispenser by her father’s pharmacist and it was just the product they needed.

“The dispenser is easy to re-fill; the alarm is loud and persistent, and it is simple to see if my father has been taking his medication. Plus, he loves the fact that he can do it himself. The peace of mind the TabTime automatic pill dispenser has given me is priceless and in the 12 months that we have been using the product, we have had no issues.”

Case Study Four:

Sue’s mother was diagnosed with dementia four and a half years ago and lives alone but requires carers, family and neighbours to support her every day.

Before purchasing the automatic tablet dispenser, she relied on a medication chart and compliance packs but often mistook her dementia medication; sometimes taking them all at once and other times forgetting to take them at all.

“One of the best aspects of the automatic pill dispenser is that my mother can’t get in to it, however much she tries. I know that she is safe with this product and that she is guaranteed to take her medication when she is supposed to.”

Sue’s mother also enjoys the routine aspect of the dispenser. She knows when it will go off, she knows what to expect when it does go off and she knows how to use it.

“I recommend this dementia product not just to those affected by dementia, but to all my friends who have elderly relatives that experience problems remembering to take their prescribed medications. It just works.”

Mental Health Case Study

Having lived with mental health problems his entire life, Kate’s father has to take 20 different tablets every day. He was diagnosed with bi-polar and schizophrenia at just 18 and is dependent on his medication to help him sleep, to wake him up and to thin his blood. He also suffers with multiple other health problems including stage 3 kidney failure.

For years he relied on lots of different pill boxes to manage his medications and Kate has memories from her childhood of her father counting out his pills of an evening.

Sadly, as he got older, he turns 72 in September, and after experiencing a bleed on the brain, Kate’s father began to both over and undertake his medication.

“My father takes Clozaril, a highly potent drug and it was incredibly scary to think that he could be taking too much of this particular prescription.”

Fortunately, Kate discovered the TabTime automatic pill dispenser five years ago and would now not be without it.

“The pill dispenser has provided us with a much more streamlined process when it comes to my father’s medication needs. His pharmacist is now able to liaise with his psychologist and make any necessary adjustments to his treatment plan. Plus, for my brother, who is my father’s carer, it has meant one less thing for him to worry about.”

Equally importantly, Kate’s father himself raves about the product, taking it everywhere with him and enjoying the fact that it allows him to feel in control of his medication.

“I cannot recommend the TabTime automatic pill dispenser enough. It is absolutely worth the money and, even though my father can be careless and heavy-handed, it’s lasted the distance.”

Other Health Conditions Case Study

Diane had previously bought the TabTime automatic pill dispenser for her mother who suffers with dementia with vast success and when she no longer needed it after moving into a care home, she did not hesitate to pass the pill dispenser on to her mother-in-law.

“My mother-in-law does not suffer with dementia, but she does have memory issues that are consistent with old age and she has to take numerous forms of medication, with her main health condition being myeloma.”

Like many older people, Diana’s mother-in-law struggled to remember all the different medicines she had to take, especially seeing her prescriptions would often change from one week to the next.

Part of my mother-in-law’s treatment for myeloma is chemotherapy which she takes in tablet form, every other day, three weeks on and one week off. Without the TabTime automatic pill dispenser, the process of taking her medication would have been far too confusing for her, even though she is sharp for her age and enjoys being in control of her tablets.”

Diane and her husband have also benefited from purchasing the automatic pill dispenser, enjoying its ease of use and the peace of mind it brings them.

“Sorting all my mother’s and my mother-in-law’s pills was a laborious task that I did not look forward to doing. Now, I only have to do it once a week and is a simple and stress-free procedure, providing the flexibility that we need for my mother’s changing medications.”
